Freedom from Shame

garment of shame

Freedom in Red by Jesus Solana, edited

“At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.  Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.”  Genesis 3:7-8

Shame. The very first negative emotion that enters into the world after the original sin is shame.

As a woman that has suffered from the crippling effects of this powerful emotion it is not a surprise to me that the enemy would chose to utilize this as his weapon.  For years, even after my salvation, I still struggled with the chains of shame. I stepped into this beautiful relationship with Jesus, I felt His love and forgiveness, and yet I continued to sit locked up in a place of shame.

So what is shame, well it’s an emotion in which the self is perceived as defective, unacceptable, or fundamentally damaged. (And this is exactly how I felt about myself. I was defective, unacceptable, damaged goods!) It’s a painful feeling of humiliation and distress, and often times (but not all the time) it occurs after the consciousness of committing wrong or foolish behavior.

You see I had lived a life full of wrong and foolish behaviors. Way too many to count.  And although I knew the Lord had forgiven me for each and every one, I still felt bound up inside, afraid to let others see and know the sins of my past.

I just wanted to cover it up. Hide it down deep.  And when I read this scripture above I realized that I was not the only one having this reaction to shame.  When Adam and Eve sinned and felt shame they did the exact same thing. They covered themselves up, and when they heard the Lord approaching they hid from Him.

Ladies, it is thousands of years later, and here we are still struggling with the same response to shame.

I think of shame like a garment that is put on and worn.  After wearing the garment for so long its seems like it is a part of you, like it has some how grown into your skin.  I eventually became so tired of being covered in this garment of shame that I cried out to the Lord in a moment of desperation for Him to release me of it.

The God that is faithful in all things, heard my prayer.  In the middle of a women’s conference, during the chorus of a worship song, the Lord sang into the deep parts within me, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is Freedom!”.

In an instant I felt the Lord remove the heavy cloak of shame that was draped over me,  and replace it with the garment of splendor.  In my mind I could see Him take it from me and place it as far as the east is to the west away from me.  He told me to never again identify myself with the old, that I was a new creation, and that He would not have his precious child clothed in the garment of shame anymore.

The enemy may be the author of shame, but the Lord is the author of salvation. And when you allow the author of salvation to enter into your life, He will bring His Spirit to you . . . and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom! Freedom from sin.  Freedom from shame.  Freedom from the past.

Ladies, let’s not sit in a place of shame anymore, instead let’s stand together in the position of truth.   Shame is lies. It’s wrong perspective, it’s slavery and bondage, and the enemy is its master.  Do not let him twist things in your mind anymore.

The truth is you are loved. You are beautiful, and you are not defined by your sins or your past.  You are the daughter of the King, and He loves you . . . just as you are.

Please join me in this prayer of victory:

Dear Lord Jesus,

I ask you to not only come into my heart, but to penetrate my mind.  Remove from me the lies that I have believed. Lift from me the garment of shame that I have worn and replace it with your love, grace and truth.  Thank you for seeing the real me  and loving me.  Help me to not be afraid and hide, but instead assist me in living a victorious life that glorifies you. In your name, Amen.

Ladies, below is a video of a very powerful song.  When I need reminded of His love, when the enemy tries to whisper lies in my ear, I listen to this song.  I hope it encourages and blesses you as it has me.

Love you Ladies!!!
